Elemental, enigmatic and modernist. Inspired by the synergy of change in nature and human interaction, the metal finish ‘Shousugiban’ shows a fragmented design. Using a method from ancient times to preserve timber in Japan, the result is an irregular dried out surface formed by the natural structure of the timber which is softer and weaker in some areas.
Similar to Burnt, this panel captures a further moment of decay. The mould is made from a burning a beautiful reclaimed piece of local timber. Carefully charred by hand, over a three-day period, forming a naturally protective coating - the process is very time-consuming but results in a visually stunning effect. Once the panel is cast, it’s then sealed with a hand poured liquid metal highlighting tensions of elements in both art and nature. The rich, satin colours highlight the texture of the wood for an immensely tactile experience
