Using a method called Yakisugi, Burnt is inspired by the centuries-old Japanese technique for preserving and finishing wood by charring it with fire. The surface of the wood is charred with a high-intensity flame distributed evenly across the panel. A wire brush removes the char created by the blowtorch to reveal a rich, dark, brownish-black colour. This process takes three days, working panel by panel; burning and brushing by hand. Finished with a molten metal poured over the surface and cooled, the gravitas imparted by the process and finished result are undeniable. The charring of the wood reveals clean, distinct lines and an inherent textural beauty with an imposing aura of intrigue and depth.
